Climate Changers: Meet the Surround Vision Team
Founder of Surround Vision and VR Creative Director at Sky VR studios. An award winning writer and director he’s produced films for the UN, SKY, BBC, Channel 4, as well as developing VR experiences for a number of platforms and devices. A creative technologist at heart, Richard sees immersive technology as the perfect opportunity to craft a new style of storytelling and uses VR and AR to take audiences into the heart of the story.
Mitch Turnbull is an award-winning documentary film producer and director with over twenty years experience in the US and the UK. She has made films and media content for a variety of different broadcasters, studios and organisations including the UN, BBC, Disneynature, PBS, National Geographic, Discovery and The Royal Foundation (The Duke of Cambridge). Mitch is a BAFTA VR Advisory Associate and a South West Creative Technology Network Immersion Fellow.
A pioneering VR director developing groundbreaking 360 documentaries. Mary sees VR as a revolutionary new medium to create a unique empathy between the viewer and the characters in her films, using intimate documentary techniques to bring the audience into the heart of a narrative. From day one her work with Surround vision has been a beautiful collaboration of emotion and cutting edge technique. breaking the mould as one of the first specialist directors in VR.
Richard is a VR industry pioneer who has been pushing the boundaries of 360 production techniques for the last 7 years. His calm professionalism has ensured a number of ground-breaking projects were delivered under difficult situations, including ‘Growing a World Wonder’ for the UN, ‘Mamies Dream’ for Plan International where grip and cameras were pushed to the limit. With 20 years experience in broadcast Richard loves finding ways to bring ideas to life.
Head of Production for Surround Vision. Craig has been a producer on over a dozen feature films and documentaries. Including the Sundance Grand Jury winning LIKE CRAZY, WAR OF WORDS, a documentary that premiered in competition at the Rotterdam film festival, and MY PURE LAND, which was the UK’s submission for best Foreign Language Oscar.

The Female Planet:
A five-part series showcasing young women from around the world who are breaking the boundaries in their professions. The series mixes 360 live action with CGI graphics to immerse audiences into the world of these inspiring women. Contributors include:

A Surround Vision original following a 22-year-old refugee, Aamir, who, whilst escaping the threat of murder in Sudan, begins a journey across Sudan, Libya, the Mediterranean, Italy and France. Set in the Notorious ‘Jungle’ in Calais, the film highlights the plight of refugees trapped in Europe.
After kickstarting the project, Surround Vision were approached by Toby Coffey of the National Theatre who was interested in collaboration. The VR film has since toured around the World.
A 360 documentary following 22-year-old Mamie’s world in Sierra Leone. We see what it’s like for a young girl who dreams of becoming a teacher, but has to fight against Forced Genital Cutting and expectations she should drop out of school.
The film was first shown at a 200-person fundraising dinner. The success of the film in creating empathy, led Plan to continue using the film to raise both money and awareness for their campaign.
Growing a World Wonder – United Nations:
The plan was simple – Create a VR film that would transport world leaders to the frontline of desertification in Senegal. Digital agency ‘VentureThree’ and the UN approached Surround Vision to create the ground-breaking film ‘Growing a World Wonder’ about the communities who were coming together to tackle Climate change along the ‘wall’.
Great Green Wall
The Great Green Wall is an incredible, generation-defining project setting out to stop the Sahara encroaching into the savannah lands by planting a wall of trees 8000 km long across central Africa. The UN wanted to create a film that would showcase and ultimately raise funds for the project during the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, November 2015.
Premiered at 2015 UN Climate Change Conference (COP 21), utilised at various events, including Rio Olympics 2016, to raise awareness about deforestation in southern Africa. iOS, Android and Gear VR apps as well as social media platforms.
